Prebuilt gaming PCs, mini PCs, all-in-ones and Mac desktops. Every configuration is its own listing: the same case with a different graphics card, memory or storage has a different price and a different record. On a prebuilt gaming PC, most of the price is the graphics card, so compare the model of card before the price. Apple sets Mac prices and retailers cut them by the same amount on the same day, usually most after a new chip is announced. Mini PCs run from office machines to small gaming boxes, and the processor named in the title tells you which one you are looking at.

How much is a desktop computer?

The kind of box decides most of the price: a mini PC, an all-in-one with its own screen and a gaming tower sit at three different levels, so one average across them describes none of them. The type and brand tables on this page are today’s Amazon prices for every new desktop we track.

Mini PCs fill the bottom of the shelf

Most of the cheapest desktops are mini PCs from makers such as GMKtec, ACEMAGIC, KAMRUI and BOSGAME: a laptop-class processor, an Intel N-series chip or a mobile AMD Ryzen, in a small box sold with memory, storage and Windows 11 installed. They handle a browser, documents and streaming video well; they are not built for current games or heavy editing.

Check whether the memory sits in a slot before choosing the smaller configuration. A listing that says LPDDR5 usually means memory soldered to the board, and then the amount you buy is the amount it keeps.

An all-in-one includes the screen

An all-in-one from HP or Lenovo puts the computer behind its own display, usually 22 to 27 inches, so its price includes a monitor that a mini PC or a tower does not. Compare one with a mini PC plus a monitor, not with a mini PC alone. The trade-off is repair: the screen and the computer are one unit, and there is little room inside for upgrades.

A gaming desktop is priced by its graphics card

In a gaming desktop the graphics card is the largest part of the price, and two towers with the same processor can sit hundreds of dollars apart on the card alone. The cheapest gaming listings often carry cards several generations old under a new case and its lighting, so the card’s name in the listing is the thing to check. Our graphics card pages price each chip on its own.

Macs

Apple’s desktops start with the Mac mini; the iMac adds its own screen, and the Mac Studio sits above both. Their memory is part of the Apple chip and cannot be added later, so buy the amount you will need.

Desktops by type

Typed by what the listing calls itself; one that names no type is left out. Same prices as the panel above: one per product, new condition.

What is the average desktop price?
$864.10 across the 84 desktops we can price today, against a middle price of $637.99. The average sits above the middle because a few of the dearest models pull it, so the middle price is the better guide to what a typical one costs. One price per product, the cheapest live offer, read in the last few hours.
Is a mini PC good enough for everyday use?
For a browser, email, documents and streaming video, yes: its processor is the kind found in budget and mid-range laptops. For current games, 3D work or long video exports, look at a desktop with a dedicated graphics card.
Can you upgrade a desktop later?
A tower, usually: memory, storage and the graphics card sit in standard slots. A mini PC often takes a second SSD, and more memory unless it is soldered, as LPDDR5 usually is. An all-in-one allows little, and a Mac’s memory is fixed when you buy it.
